Theaters were stuffed to the brim this week as five new releases entered the fold. Still, audiences cast their vote and the back-end of the summer season has lived up to its terrible reputation.
Early estimates put The Expendables in a confident first place with $15 Million for the weekend. Testosterone-infused males flocked to this holy grail of muscle and even a fairly large drop couldn’t keep it from the top spot.
The true horror of the weekend lies in second place though, as Vampires Suck topped all the new releases with an estimated $12.5 Million for the weekend. Though this is worse then the last spoof effort, Meet The Spartans, it is still $12.4 Million more then this movie should be making.
Eat, Pray, Love had an expected mediocre drop and should end up around 3rd place with $11.5 Million. Lottery Ticket could be the surprise of the weekend as early estimates have it at fourth place with $11 Million. That’s not enough to be a hit, but it’s still a shock for people such as me who had completely counted it out.
Finally, The Other Guys, Piranha 3D, and Nanny McPhee Returns, are all circling around $8.5-9.5 Million and should round out the Top 7 for the weekend.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The Expendables are both in heated competition for the bonus and the big drop for SPvTW confirms that your average theater attendee disappoints me.
FYI: All the top 10 this week, save for The Expendables, are pretty close and final Monday numbers could be dramatically different then what’s said here. So take this as a grain of salt on the weekend’s box office turkey.
Caption Contest: Smellface earned 30 points last weekend for his genius caption and this week brings an opportunity for you to do the same. One caption per theater, most likes wins, don’t vote till Monday, points don’t count in Summer Showdown or Challenges, blah blah blah.
