Expend, Pray, Destroy Scott Pilgrim

One year after District 9 exploded into theaters and attracted audiences of all kinds, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World failed at the exact same mission. Unable to branch out beyond its core fan-base, SPvTW was no match for the more commercial fare in theaters.

The Expendables easily grabbed first place with an estimated $34 Million for the weekend. Men of all ages flocked to see things blow up and young people killing old people who kill young people. This is great news for the fledging Lionsgate, but not too good for the many moviegoers who disliked the film, as a sequel is now likely.

Eat, Pray, Love did just the opposite and attracted huge female numbers with a second place opening and around $26.5 Million for the weekend. EPL did a great job putting the Julie & Julia fans back into the theater and should have somewhat small drops in the upcoming weeks.

Finally, The Other Guys has a hold on third place with an estimated $17 Million and SPvTW is likely to earn only $11 Million and a fourth place finish. Though SPvTW is likely to find a big following on home video (a la Fight Club), it’s still disappointing Universal’s large advertising campaign couldn’t draw more people to the theater.

On the bonus front, The Other Guys (estimated drop: 56%) and Step-Up 3D (65%) are the current front-runners.
