The reign of 3D took another hit this weekend as Step-Up 3D earned both the smallest opening of the series and a 3rd place finish behind Inception’s 4th week.
The big success this weekend is Will Ferrell’s The Other Guys. This buddy-cop comedy finished in an awesome 1st place on Friday with $13 Million and is likely to reach $35 Million by Sunday. Considering Cop Out opened with only $18 Million earlier this year, it’s good to know America has at least some taste.
Inception once again had a puny -31% drop and is looking at a #2 finish with around $19 Million for the weekend. Step-Up 3D’s $16 Million opening must be a disappointment for Disney as higher ticket prices and increased spectacle did nothing to raise the earnings for this hopefully-dead franchise.
Rounding out the early estimates are Salt with $10.8 Million, Dinner for Schmucks with $10.2 Million, and Despicable Me with $10 Million for the weekend.
The bonus will likely go to Charlie St. Cloud as Dinner for Schmucks large -60% drop was no match for St. Cloud’s truly awful -69% drop.
