What a terrible weekend for movie-goers. Last weekend marked the release of two preteen dominated movies and sadly the better appears to have been The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. How any movie could have been worse than that is beyond me, but The Last Airbender somehow accomplished the enormous feat. And yet both still made seemingly endless amounts of money out of the dribble the called film. Eclipse took in $69 million and The Last Airbender took in $41 million. Not a bad weekend for the box office in general.
This weekend hopefully brings the promise of better, more entertaining movies. Opening this weekend are Despicable Me and Predators. Movies with vastly different audiences hoping for another weekend of box office magic.
Despicable Me is an animated movie starring the voice of Steve Carrell. It will appeal to younger kids and probably their parents that recognize the immense voice-acting cast and bring their kids in. Early buzz also indicates all positive reviews which should also bring out the parents with their kids. Despicable Me does however directly compete with Toy Story 3 on it’s 4th weekend. Despicable Me opens this weekend in 3200 theaters.
Predators opens this weekend to a completely different audience that of action/horror fans. Predators is (I believe) the 5th movie in the Predator franchise including AVP and AVP:Requiem. This one that features Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishbourne in it’s cast should appeal to the action fans hoping for blood and gore thanks to Robert Rodriguez’s name being attached as a producer known for Planet Terror and Sin City. Predators, however features no major competition among other movies this weekend. Predators opens this weekend in 2,700 theaters.
