This weekend’s surprise hit The Karate Kid is not so much a surprise that it was in the top 5, but that it was #1 and the massive lead it had over its competition, the debuting A-Team. The Karate Kid secured a lead so large it became a surprise 3-screen success. Following in the shoes of numerous other better and I’m sure more original movies. (No I have not seen it I merely hate the idea of the remake)
Not so surprising however will be the success of this week’s new release Toy Story 3. A movie 15 years in the making is being released in 3-D ($$$) and has a huge fan-base stretching out to nearly all demographics. Basically any marketers’ wet dream. I would go on but would probably end up repeating myself. Toy Story 3, it’s gonna be big. It opens this week in 3900 theaters.
Also opening this week is Jonah Hex. And what a great weekend for it to open as it is nearly the complete opposite of Toy Story 3 rather than a large audience it appeals to few comic book fans. Rather than positive reviews it has negative associations so far. Rather than aspirations to box office success, it is expected to fail. It’s like the retarded kid accidentally being placed in the gifted class. It does not belong in the same echelons as Toy Story 3. Jonah Hex opens this weekend in 2700 theaters.
Also opening is Cyrus in 4 theaters, but we’ll save that for its wider release.
Caption Contest: Last week’s caption contest winner is SilentBob with 7 likes for his witty interpretation of the picture involving a young child being sexually attacked with a stick. Class is obviously not dead.
PS I’m sorry if I offended anyone, no offense was intended but I can see it occurring as tonight’s post was a tad more crass than usual.
