Weekend: Summer in full Swing.

This past weekend showed the opening of two movies that could easily be classified as summer blockbusters: Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia unfortunately neither of them held up to what was expected and the returning Shrek 4 took the weekend. The upcoming weekend just has more of the same. Opening this weekend are 4 new movies each with about 3000 theaters to their names.

First is Marmaduke, the live-action adaptation of the newspaper comic of the same name about a dog that talks. Obviously this was a great choice for live-action…  Regardless Marmaduke hopes to appeal to children and take away from Shrek 4’s earnings. It is opening this weekend in 3000 theaters.

Next we have Get Him to the Greek, sort of a spin-off from Forgetting Sarah Marshall in which Russell Brand reprises his character of Aldous Snow and Jonah Hill plays a lackey for a record company tasked to bring Aldous Snow to the concert facility.  This obviously hopes to bring in the teenagers- 30’s crowd appealing to Apatow fans and directed by Nicholas Stoller who also did Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  In my opinion Get Him to the Greek looks to be one of more promising movies opening this weekend and I’m seeing it at an early screening Thurday; although I do fit into their key demographic.  Opening this weekend in 2700 theaters.

The third new movie this weekend is Killers, starring Ashton Kutcher and Katharine Heigl.  This will likely be competing with GHtG’s audience as an action movie similar to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but as PG-13 it’s likely to get more of the middle teens or teenagers buying tickets to sneak into GHtG. It opens this weekend in 2700 theaters.

The last movie opening this weekend is Splice.  An R-rated thriller/drama, fresh out of the 2010 Sundance starring Adrien Brody.  The advertisements peg this as a regular thriller which will likely bring in some of the audience from GHtG and Killers, but adults may also be interested in this movie due to it’s buzz from Sundance and Adrien Brody being a part of it.  It opens this weekend in 2500 theaters.
