Friday: Sex sells, Persia doesn’t.

POP Image

A hard week for picks turned into a disappointing weekend at the box office as one new release fell below many expectations and the other was this summer’s second bomb in two weeks. I’d say the box office disasters can only go down here, but Jonah Hex is only a few weeks away.

Sex and the City 2 earned an estimated $13 Million on Friday, and is heading toward around $41 Million for the weekend. Though this still means the film is a hit, many expected more after a stellar $14 Million on its Thursday debut. Dedicated SATC fans seem to have flocked to the film on Thursday, toning down the weekend receipts. The franchise hasn’t lost much steam from its first installment though, and a third entry can’t be too far down the line.

Prince of Persia has the honor of becoming the second bomb of the summer as it earned only $10 Million on Friday, and is looking at about $33 Million for the weekend. With a budget of $200 Million, huge advertising costs, and a weak opening overseas, Disney is looking at big losses for this swashbuckling epic. The film failed to ignite the Pirates of the Caribbean audience the studio hoped for and unless very small drops occur in the next few weeks, I predict we won’t be seeing very many big-budget video game films for a while.

Shrek Forever After dropped a modest 45% in its second week for $11 Million on Friday and might be able to reach the #1 spot by the end of the weekend. If not, it will settle for a still strong second place.

The Buzz: The third episode of the 3 Screen This is rapidly approaching and they want your ideas on what to discuss in the next episode. Leave a comment with movie themed topics you want to hear on the show.
