Friday: Iron Man steals from Robin Hood… keeps for himself

There was much debate leading up to this weekend about screenings with the tremendously successful Iron Man 2’s second weekend approaching.  It was in direct competition from the newest Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe team-up Robin Hood, which had the benefit of opening Cannes this year, however was faced with mixed reviews.  Most people expected Iron Man 2 to come out ahead because of it’s overall broader appeal, but the big question was 3 screens or 2 for IM2 (or 1 screen or 2 for RH).

The latest estimates/early friday numbers (via deadline.com) have Iron Man 2 as $2 million ahead of Robin Hood for Friday and estimates put it at $13 million ahead of Robin Hood for the weekend. So you know what that means… 3 screeners lose.  2 IM2 and 2 RH are now evidently the best screens for this weekend, but it may still change.

More tension from the bonus challenge for this weekend between Nightmare on Elm Street and Iron Man 2.  Based on the same numbers for the weekend, Iron Man 2 should be expected to have a 58.6% drop. Nightmare on Elm Street however was not included in their estimates but according to boxofficeguru.com’s numbers they expect a 55% drop for Elm Street.
