Post-Iron Man 2 Weekend
Everything seems to be telling me that the summer movie season has officially started after Iron Man 2’s first weekend where it grossed $122,128,480. Not too shabby and it seems to have pretty good word of mouth as well…
Which brings me to this coming weekend: will Iron Man 2 continue to dominate or will their be a sharp drop off for its second weekend with the release of Robin Hood? 2 screens each? 3-screen IM2? Or maybe even 3-screen Robin Hood?
Robin Hood brings back together Ridley Scott and Rusell Crowe after 2000’s Gladiator which won Best Picture and Best Actor that year and made $34 million its first weekend with no major competition opening in 2,943 theaters. Perhaps since the commercials mention both Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott and since it is opening Cannes this year Robin Hood will successfully bring out the film lovers.
Robin Hood on the other hand faces competition from IM2. Thankfully though it’s opening in 3,400 theaters this weekend.
Also opening is Letters from Juliet, a chick flick with no major previous following a la a Nicholas Sparks movie (Dear John, The Notebook). However it should be facing little competition this weekend aside from The Back-Up Plan, which does not really deserve to be mentioned three weeks after its release. It opens this weekend in 2,800 theaters.
Also opening is Just Wright which has something to do with basketball and stars Queen Latifah. That’s really all I think needs to be said, as it is obviously going to be 3-screened by all. It opens this weekend in 1,800 theaters.
Congratulations to MBO on the caption contest win again. +30 points are awarded to his theater New Box Order.
