¡Viva la George Clooney!

GtD

Who knew an incredibly slow and low-key drama could top the box office in this age of music-video editing? The Cloonster, that’s who.

Though expectations were low at the start of the week, older adults came out in full force and catapulted The American to a #1 finish with around $14 Million. The film may suffer from bad word of mouth though, as mainstream audiences are slowly realizing it’s not the fast-paced thriller that the trailers promised.

Machete is likely to finish in the #3 spot for the weekend with around $10 Million. This is below Grindhouse’s $11 Million in 2007, which is disappointing considering GH was 190 minutes and Machete is only 105.

Takers and The Last Exorcism are filling up the #2 and #4 spots with $12 and $8 million, respectively. The Last Exorcism is also the easy bonus winner with a drop around 65%.

The final new release this weekend, Going the Distance, completely bombed with $7 Million and a #5 finish. This is $2 million above the Drew Barrymore-directed Whip It, but still incredibly low for someone who starred in E.-freaking-T.

Caption Contest: CheeseCrusader won last week’s contest for the second week in a row with his eclectic mix of Chris Brown and heartbreaking romance. Remember, one caption per theater, most likes wins, you remember the rest. Looking for inspiration? Check out the equally confused and interested face of the lady on the left.
