Friday Results: 'Sherlock' takes best X-mas record
What a nailbiter we’re in for this weekend between Sherlock Holmes and Avatar. Despite the fact that Avatar’s ticket prices are technically higher with IMAX/3D costs included, it may still not be enough to beat out Sherlock, which scored the highest Christmas day record ever.
Sherlock has the best chance here, simply based on screen counts (3,626 vs. 3,456), but it will be an...
The Last Minute Report
Let’s get this out of the way: Merry Christmas.
In other news:
- Up in the Air is doing poorly so far with its 1,895 screens (barely in the Top 5) - Alvin is dominating the box office with nearly $20 mil. on 3,656 screens - A Christmas Carol may end up being a very bad choice for a 1-screener. But who knows (currently at No. 7 as of Wednesday).
Official screen counts for the rest of the...
Upcoming Theater Counts
For those of you who were lucky enough to enter the Megaplex Division (i.e. the top division), get ready for the ride of your life.
Megaplex Division rules: 1. Do not talk about the Megaplex Division (ha! a joke!); 2. If a theater challenges you (which they will), you will auto-accept it by the end of the week if you aren’t already in a match; 3. Losing a match means -200 points.

Friday Results: 'Avatar' looking for $80 million
Update to system: Anyone who purchased the upgrade from the store have been refunded those 25 points. Those 25 points will instead be taken from you during the results period, meaning it will affect your challenges from now on.
Avatar finally pulled through, despite its lackluster midnight showing, and brought in a solid $27 million on a weekend filled with snow storms and empty pockets after...
The Last Minute Report
You probably won’t read this. Why? You’re at Avatar, being blown away by James Cameron’s brilliance.
Or maybe you’re at Princess and the Frog, being blown away by the fact that animated flicks can actually be shown without 3D glasses still.
The real theaters are banking on the latter apparently. Take a look at the screen counts:
Princess and the Frog: 3,475 Avatar:...
Weekend Report: 'Frog'-tastic
If you would have told me last year that a film using “standard” animation could still do decently well at the box office and even beat out a racial sports flick that had momentum AND be about a princess and a frog AND be lame enough to title it blatantly what it’s about…I would have said, “Not worth three screens.”
Turns out it kind of was. In fact, it was...
Friday Results: Everybody's Not Fine
It felt like an abysmal weekend going into it, and as it turns out, it really is. Don’t be shocked when you see a +20 or +30 as your Friday night score, it really was that sad.
Most shocking was the debut of Everybody’s Fine, a film that had every reason to do well: 1. It was a terrible film and 2. It was holiday-themed. With the economy as it is, however, moviegoers aren’t...
The Last Minute Report
You’ve probably tried to avoid thinking about it all week, but it’s finally time to make your final picks. It’s one of those weeks where the openers are junk and last week’s contenders still seem like…well, contenders.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
Final Theater Counts
